Woodcraft DIY Classes
Make Your Own
Coffee Table Class
Saturday Feb. 24, 2018
Location: Woodcraft Columbus
Naturally, wood expands and contracts over time & due to weather changes. In this class, Treg will teach you how to build your live edge piece while allowing for this natural
movement. Using a router jig, you'll flatten your live edge ash slab, sand to 180grit and
attach steel trapezoid legs. This piece can then be taken home to finish & be used as a coffee table or entry way bench.
Inlaying a "Bowtie/Dutchman" Class
Sunday Feb 25, 2018
During the sawing process, live edge wood is more likely to result in cracks or splits. Inlaying bow-ties helps to stabilize these cracks or voids in the wood while adding design appeal to the finished piece. In this class, Tyler Hillyard will teach you how to inlay a bow-tie into a board, without using a jig or template.
Removal of the famous 'Jackson Magnolia' Tree
We wrote a year ago about the famous Jackson Magnolia Tree and the history dating back to 1829. When Andrew Jackson left Tennessee to come to the White House for his inauguration for President of the United States, he brought a Magnolia sprout from his late wife, Rachel's favorite tree on their home property. This sprout was planted on the South Lawn of the White House and is the oldest known presidential tree on the grounds of the White House.
This tree was recently in the news as Melania Trump has made the call to remove a significant part of this historic tree due to decay & potential hazard. During the 1970s, the Jackson Magnolia started to experience problems when new leader trunks began to sprout from the base & cement used to help shore up a cavity of the tree. The tree has stood with the help of a pole & cable system - which can no longer prevent the tree from collapsing.
The White House has made the call to remove a good portion of this tree but will preserve the wood & seedlings if another tree needs to be planted on the lawn.
